Mrs Brown’s Boys star Danny O’Carroll says his home was a house full of affection and emotions, adding ‘People are shocked when they see me hugging Dad but that’s just how we are’
Danny O’Carroll says his dad Brendan O’Carroll’s easy way with emotions and affections shaped the man he is today.
Opening up about the incredible bond he shares with his family – and how growing up in a house full of hugs and “I love yous” impacted him, he told RSVP Live, it was clear from a young age that his upbringing was a little different from that of his friends.
The Mrs. Brown’s Boys star, who is known for his close relationship with his famous father added: “I always knew growing up that I was in a different family compared to my friends.”
“I never saw my friends’ dads act the way mine did.”

While many Irish dads of that generation were known for being more reserved, Brendan O’Carroll was the opposite – something that left a lasting impression on Danny.
“My dad hugged me every time I woke up in the morning and every time I went to bed at night. He told me he loved me several times a day. My mum was the same,” Danny shares. “I was in the most loving, loving family.”

It’s not just his parents – Danny says the affectionate nature of the O’Carroll clan extends to his siblings too.
“My brothers and sisters, we always tell each other we love each other. It’s just the way we were brought up.”
And while it might come as a surprise to some fans when they see Danny being openly emotional with his dad, he insists that it’s second nature to them.
“People always seem shocked when they see me hugging Dad and getting emotional,” he says, “but anybody can tell you – in my family, the first thing we do is we hug.”
“I greet everyone with a hug to say hello. I’m a hugger,” Danny laughs. “And that’s just what we do. That’s how I grew up – my dad, my mum, that’s the way they brought us up.”
