Brendan O’Carroll speaks about Mrs Brown’s Boys’ future and ending Christmas episodes

One of the all-important Christmas traditions every year is sitting down with your family, eating a sandwich with all your dinner leftovers and watching Mrs Brown’s Boys

Brendan O’Carroll has become synonymous with Christmas as his hit show, Mrs Brown’s Boys, always airs a special Christmas episode.

While it has become an annual tradition, people have wondered in recent years how long the comedy show will continue.

The creator of the show looked ahead to the programme’s future and explained how it might end.

Brendan explained that airing the Christmas episode comes down to its broadcaster.

“I honestly feel that’s the nature of our business,” he told The Irish Sun. “We’re popular right now, and they put us on Christmas Day, but the BBC at some stage is going to have to say: ‘Listen, we’re going to take you out of Christmas Day because we’ve got a new thing that’s more popular.’ But that’s the way the business should be, because if it wasn’t, Jesus Christ, John Lennon would still be writing songs!”

Families across Ireland and the United Kingdom sit down on Christmas to watch the annual episode – and that includes the people behind the show as well.

Brendan shared: “We have a pyjama party,” he said. “All of the family come in their Christmas pyjamas, and we have a few drinks and watch the Christmas episode.”

One of the most challenging parts of putting together the Christmas episode is actually the tree – with Mrs Brown getting into some crazy trouble each year because of the important decoration.

“I got to the stage where I’m saying to myself: ‘Why did I do anything with the f***king tree?

“Literally from the 1st of January I go, ‘Okay, I’ve got to do something with the tree for next year…’ So finding that has been one of the hardest parts.”

This year, Mrs Brown’s Boys is going sustainable when it comes to their Christmas tree.

He added: “It is class! Every year I sketch up the Christmas tree and what I want to do, and I go to the art department around August. This year when I sketched it up, I went, ‘There’s absolutely no way they’re going to be able to build this!

“Well, my God they built it. It’s absolutely stunning – no leaves, no branches, no nothing. You have to see it to believe it!”
