Brendan O’Carroll reveals fate of Mrs Brown’s Boy after Christmas special

Brendan O’Carroll has revealed if Mrs Brown’s Boys will return after their upcoming Christmas special this year.

The Dublin based sitcom’s Christmas special returns to our screens every year — but the show hasn’t been a regular series for a decade, only returning for four episodes as a ‘mini series’ last year.

Despite it not being known if there will be another series of the show and if Brendan and his family will return as regular fixtures at some point, Brendan confirmed that the show’s Christmas special is happening this year — with another mini-series potentially on the cards.

‘I think we’re going to be doing another mini-series for April, but whenever the BBC broadcast them,’ Brendan said at the National Television Awards — where the show picked up Best Comedy.

As for the upcoming Christmas special, Brendan said that it hasn’t been written yet — but is set to begin filming in just a few weeks.

‘It’s hard to believe this Christmas Day episode will be our 50th episode,’ Brendan said. ‘We do the same special in three weeks or four weeks time. I could tell you what they’re about if I had have f**king written them but I’ve not written them.’

The sitcom won Best Comedy at the NTA’s on Wednesday night — with people shocked that they beat out the popular comedy Ghosts, including Kiell Smyth-Benoe, who plays Mike — who was seen glaring in disappointment after losing to the comedy.

Viewers took to social media in agreement with Mike’s reaction, with one person sharing a picture of his grimace and saying ‘Kiell Smith-Bynoe speaks for us all with Mrs Brown beating #Ghosts at the #NTA #NationalTelevisionAwards.’

Another added ‘That was my reaction at home,’ while a third shared ‘Kiell Smith-Bynoe’s face sums up my feelings on Mrs Brown’s Boys win.’

Not everyone was in agreement, however, with some people standing by Mrs Brown’s Boys.

One person admitted ‘I like Mrs Brown’s Boys. So there #NationalTelevisionAwards.’

Another remarked ‘Only one thing in life is certain. Mrs Brown’s Boys and Ant & Dec will win awards. Year in, year out.’

It was the 23rd consecutive win for presenting duo Ant and Dec, who have dominated the TV presenter category for more than two decades, beating stiff competition such as Alison Hammond, Bradley Walsh and Claudia Winkleman for the award.

Other big wins on the night included Davina McCall, who was honoured with the prestigious Special Recognition award while Strictly Come Dancing, which Davina co-hosts with Claudia Winkleman, won best Talent Show.
