In an emotional tribute, Danny said: “[He is] the most amazing person you could ever think of. He is the best. I could sit here all day and give you every compliment under the sun and what he means to me and what he means as a person. He’s the most amazing human I know.”

Recalling growing up in a famous household, Danny, 41, said Brendan, 69, “never lost the run of himself”.

He added: “I loved every minute of it. The way dad handled himself around it. He never changed. He always kept his feet on the ground and he never lost the run of himself. Even though he was famous, he didn’t go around like he was famous, if you get me. It didn’t affect me in any way whatsoever.”

But he laughed: “He curses as much off stage.”

Danny said Brendan will only go to the show if he gets to the final as he currently lives in Florida with his wife Jenny Gibney.

He added: “No, he said if I get to the final, he might come back. I miss him and I would love for him to come back and sit and watch but that is only if I get to the final. I’d love to get to the final hoping that my dad would come home to see me.

“I don’t plan on winning. There are so many other people that deserve it. I am used to it [not seeing Brendan] but I miss him like crazy.

“I saw him at Christmas, and I haven’t seen him since, so I’ll be looking forward to seeing him when this is all over. I’m going to go straight to Florida and get the hug that I love getting.”

Speaking about Salome dressing up as Agnes Brown, he said: “I don’t think she has a clue. She has to look at clips to see what he looks like.

“Immediately I wanted to pick my dad, as much as the viewers know at home when you love someone so much, you find different ways to express your love to that person and getting an opportunity to do something like this as a dance, you don’t get ever, and you want to nail it for my dad.”

Danny also told us about what his dad first said when he told him he had signed up to the RTE show.

“Both of the reactions were ‘Dan, please don’t.’ They’ve never seen me dance so they thought I was going on TV to make a show of myself.”

Danny said Brendan started crying when he saw Danny making show history getting four nines for his Charleston so early on in the show.

He said: “The support I have from them has just blown me away. After the Charleston, I Facetimed my dad after I went up to the dressing room and it was quite overwhelming. The feeling was nearly like winning the show, it was that good.

“Nobody has ever gotten that score before early in and my dad Facetimed me. My dad started crying on the phone. It choked me up. I couldn’t believe it.”

Tonight will be an emotional night on Dancing with the Stars as the remaining nine couples take part in dedicated dance night. Laura Nolan and Rhys McClenaghan will dance a Jive to Gold Dust by DJ Fresh in honour of his coach Luke Carson.

Luke has coached Rhys throughout his career from the lows of coming off the pommel horse mid-routine in Tokyo 2020 to achieving his lifelong dream of winning gold in Paris last summer.

Jack Woolley will dedicate his routine to his friend and two-time gold medal-winning boxer Kellie Harrington.

Jack and his professional dancer Alex Vladimirov will perform an American Smooth to Grace by The Wolfe Tones – a song which has become synonymous with Kellie.

Jack’s dedication comes after the support Kellie showed to him when he suffered a random assault just weeks after his first Olympic appearance in 2021.

Sunday night will continue to be a family affair as comedian Gearoid Farrelly and his partner, Stephen Vincent dance a Paso Doble to Holding Out For a Hero by Bonnie Tyler in honour of his own heroes, parents Eamon and Deirdre. Former Miss Universe Ireland, Aishah Akorede and her pro partner Robert Rowinski will honour her mother Kemi.

She has been the biggest influence in her life and a pillar of support as Aishah has dealt with sickle cell disease throughout her life.

They will honour Aishah and her mother’s Nigerian heritage with an African-inspired Samba to Kese (Dance) by Wizkid.

Meteorologist Joanna Donnelly and her pro partner Maciej Zieba will tango to Dreams by The Cranberries.

Joanna, who has spoken about her struggles with fertility and her IVF journey, will talk about Pomegranate, the former charity she set up to help couples who were in a similar position to her but couldn’t afford the treatment. The dedication will be to a couple who benefitted from the charity.

Elsewhere, Kin actress Yasmin Seky will praise three youth club workers who influenced her.

She credits Mary, Phil and Gary as the driving force behind encouraging her to take on a career in performing.

Social media personality, Kayleigh Trappe, and her partner, Ervinas Merfeldas will dance a Contemporary Ballroom for her four-year-old niece, Fiadh to Brave by Sara Bareilles. Finally, following his Shrek-inspired routine last week which landed him at the bottom of the leaderboard, Kevin Dundon will return with Rebecca Scott to dedicate a Tango to his wife, Catherine.

They chose David Bowie’s Let’s Dance.

None of the celebrities will be eliminated from the show, however the couple who receive the highest combined points from the judges’ score and public vote earn immunity from the following week’s first Dance-Off of the season.
