Brendan O’Carroll vows to keep making Mrs Brown’s Boys for as long as possible

Mrs Brown’s Boys creator Brendan O’Carroll is welcoming a New Year’s special of the BBC sitcom, after leaving viewers begging ‘not again’ with his latest offerings

Brendan O’Carroll has vowed to keep making Mrs Brown’s Boys for as long as possible.

The TV funnyman, 68, plans to do more episodes every time he’s offered a deal by the BBC. He told the Daily Star: “As long as the BBC keep asking, we’ll keep making episodes. It’s down to what the BBC want and what we can plan around.

“We are definitely making more specials. Whether we do another full series or not depends on dates.”

Mrs Brown’s Boys will return to screens on Monday (January 1) for a New Year’s Day special as part of the latest deal with the BBC. It has been given another plum primetime slot at 10pm on BBC One.

Brendan, who plays Mrs Agnes Brown, said: “When we started we signed on to do 18 episodes across three years. Now we’ve done 49 episodes, which is absolutely incredible. We’ll be doing our 50th episode in 2024.”

Mrs Brown’s Boys has become one of the most successful sitcoms in TV history since launching in 2011. It is aired around the world, has won a string of top awards and has had a spin-off movie and stage show. Brendan admits he isn’t a comedy genius and can’t believe it’s done so well.

He added: “I’d love to say I’m so clever that I sat down and had a plan. I had no plan. Nobody is as surprised by it all as me.”

But the last few offerings from the funnyman have left a sour taste in fans’ mouths, as they begged him to axe the programme for good. One social media user joked over the Christmas special: “It’s good how they’ll put stuff on so that people switch off the TV and play board games with their families instead!”

Another fumed: “Refuse to believe there’s people out there that actually find Mrs Brown’s Boys funny.” And a third X user said: “#MrsBrownsBoys is shocking. I’m watching to see if I laugh, but realise that I’m boosting the viewing figures, time to turn over.”
