Mrs Brown’s Boys will be returning for a new series later this year — its first in over a decade.

Created by and starring Brendan O’Carroll in the lead role of Agnes Brown, the Irish sitcom premiered in 2011 and ran for three series before returning during the festive period every year for a Christmas special.

A feature film, Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie, was released in 2014. Much more recently, the series aired two holiday specials, “Shining Mammy” and “Mammy’s Hair Loom”, on Christmas Day 2022 and New Year’s Day 2023.

The show will be back for a longer run later this year, though, with the BBC renewing the comedy show for a four-part miniseries. Filming will reportedly begin in the spring, with the new episodes due to air later in the year.

“This mini-series was actually planned for 2021,” O’Carroll said in a statement.

“Having been thwarted twice, firstly by COVID-19 and then by a post-COVID shortage of studios, it’s fantastic to, at last, have the chance to make it happen. Fasten your seatbelts and hold onto your hats.”

Josh Cole, Head of Comedy at BBC Studios, echoed O’Carroll’s sentiments, adding: “There’s no one quite like Mrs Brown. An absolute force of outrageous wit and slapstick that has audiences hooked and belly laughing. It’s great to be back.”

Jon Petrie, Director of Comedy, was also delighted by the announcement, saying: “BBC Comedy are pleased to announce that after a decade since the last full series of Mrs Brown’s Boys, millions of viewers around the UK will be thrilled to hear that Brendan is bringing Agnes and the family back together for a brand-new mini-series of his award-winning show.”

The announcement doesn’t come as a major surprise, though, given Fiona O’Carroll revealed last year that the show would return for a festive special before a four-part series.

“In October, we’ll be filming Mrs Brown: two Christmas specials and the first of a miniseries of four episodes – the other three early next year,” the Maria Brown actress teased back in August.

Mrs Brown’s Boys will return to the BBC later this year. All previous episodes are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
